Polly Pocket is a sweet little corgi mix that came to the Saratoga County Animal Shelter due to unfortunate circumstances. Although a bit timid, she did warm up to staff and volunteers somewhat quickly. Upon arrival, she was a bit underweight, something that the shelter staff would address immediately. As some time went on, the staff noticed some concerning changes in sweet Polly. She began to show no interest in food and also began sporadic vomiting. After taking a watch and wait approach to her condition for a short time with the hopes that these behaviors would pass, the medical staff decided to investigate this further. Since Friends of the Saratoga County Animal Shelter had recently purchased a new ultra sound unit for the shelter, Polly would be examined to determine if a blockage was present. The ultrasound did show some sort of blockage but what it was would be determined later. It was decided that sweet Polly would need surgery as soon as possible to determine what type of blockage was causing the problems. Arrangements were made for surgery immediately and a volunteer transported Polly to a local veterinarian office that works with the shelter on a regular basis. Another ultrasound was done and surgery occurred immediately. It was discovered that little Polly had ingested a corn cob prior to coming into the shelter, and it could not be passed. Surgery was successful and she was released the next day to a volunteer foster home to recover before returning to the shelter. She remained with the volunteer for about 10 days, recovering in a quiet setting.
Friends of the Saratoga County Animal Shelter was able to cover the expenses of a somewhat costly surgery. And Sweet Polly Pocket was adopted into a very loving home.
The donations that we receive allow us to provide medical services to our temporary residents that they would not otherwise be able to receive. And this is why we do what we do.
